Canvas FAQ: Financial aid requires proof of dropped/withdrawn student participation in the course

Instructions on how to determine a student’s last date of participation in their Canvas Course Site. This information is often requested by the Financial Aid Office concerning student’s financial aid awards.

Viewing Participation Activity from the Course Roster

  1. Log into Canvas and navigate to your course.

  2. Select People from the Course Navigation Menu

  3. Click on the name of the Inactive Student (they are still listed even though they dropped)

  4. A window will pop out on the right-hand side of the screen. Select Grades.

  5. You will be taken to the Grades screen for that particular student. From there, locate the last turned in assignment, this contains the “last date of participation” the Financial Aid Office is looking for.

Viewing Participation Activity from the Grade Book

  1. Log into Canvas and navigate to your course.

  2. Select Grades from the Course Navigation Menu

  3. Hover over the Student Name column header, and click the more options button (). Ensure that both the Inactive Enrollments and Concluded Enrollments options are checked.

  4. The course grade book will now show assignment scores and submissions for students who are no longer participating in the class.
