Changing Quiz Question Points After Students Have Made Submissions (Classic Quizzes)

Sometimes there is a need to change a Quiz’s total points after students have finished taking it. This process can be labor intensive depending on the number of changes and the number of students impacted.

NOTE: The total points a classic quiz is worth equals the questions added up.

Change the Quiz Question Points

  • Tip: Change a Quiz Question to “Extra Credit” by making it worth 0 points.

  • Select the Quiz you wish to alter.

  • Select Edit

  • Go to the “Questions” tab

  • Locate the questions that need to be updated, select the pencil/edit icon in the upper right-hand corner of the question.

  • The Question will now be editable. Enter a new number of points in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. (For this example, we want to make the question “extra credit” so the points possible is now Zero)

  • Select Update Question at the bottom of the question.

  • Repeat for additional questions.

  • Remember to select Save at the bottom of the quiz.

IMPORTANT - Keep going…

You will see the points adjusted on the quiz overview page and in Speedgrader, but for the students, grades to appear correctly in the grade book you need to complete the next update student scores

Update Student Scores

  • Open Speedgrader

    • With quizzes, the total point value on the right side is grayed out.

  • Go to each student’s submission that has already been graded.

    • Change the point values on each individual question

    • And/or add Fudge Points to the overall Quiz at the bottom of the screen.

      • Extra Credit adjustments: If you adjusted the total points to 0 for extra credit, you can leave the questions and fudge points alone.

  • When the point value has been corrected, Update Scores at the bottom of the page. This will remove the icon in the grade book and show the quiz’s new total.

Bonus!

  • If you notice a question in a quiz is not correct, you can regrade the question for all students that have already taken it. Check out What options can I use to regrade a quiz in a course? for what question types allow this.

  • Another option for creating extra credit is to create a 0 point, no-submission assignment and to add the point values students received in that column. Then change the quiz to a practice quiz to remove it from the grade book.
