Recommended Canvas Quiz Settings for Respondus Lockdown Testing

Summary

This article outlines the recommended Canvas settings for administering a Respondus Lockdown test in the classroom. These directions apply to Canvas' Classic Quizzes tool.

Instructions

  1. Start by creating the quiz with the Classic Quizzes tool, which has wider support. You can also use an existing Classic Quiz. The exam content does not need to be finalized at this time.

  2. Navigate to the desired exam and click the Edit button in the top right-hand of the page to access the settings.

  3. Change the Quiz Instructions text to include the following directions:

This exam must be taken with Respondus LockDown Browser. Please download it here: https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=497143110

If you have not used Respondus Lockdown before, see this page for directions on how to take your exams with this tool: https://boisestate.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/LTS/pages/757137480/Taking+An+Exam+With+Respondus+LockDown+Browser

  4. Set the exam timer as needed.

  5. If you would like for students to be able to see question feedback, click the checkbox next to the option to allow students to see their responses. Consider restricting this to a one-time view after submission to prevent exam material from being shared outside of the testing environment. You can always change the availability of feedback and correct answers at a later time.

  6. Set the availability window as needed. For exams administered in-class, it is recommended that you make the test available 5 minutes before class begins. It may help to also add 5 minutes to the availability deadlines.

  7. If the exam will be administered in class, it is recommended that you set an access code (password) that you only share with students at the start of class. This is to prevent students from accessing the test at home. You should also change this password immediately after class, but not during the test.

  8. Configure Lockdown Browser for this test - With the test settings configured, you can now enable Lockdown Browser for this exam from the Respondus Dashboard in your course. Step by step directions are available on this page.

Please be aware that changing the password will end any active student attempts.
