Using and Syncing Your Canvas Calendar

Summary

This article describes how you can use your calendar built into Canvas to keep track of your assignments and manually added events, like study groups. It also explains how to sync your Canvas calendar with your personal calendar using Google Calendar, iCloud Calendar, or Outlook.

Accessing Your Calendar

Click on the Calendar option in the global navigation menu.

Tips For Using Your Calendar More Effectively

  • If you want to change the viewing method, you can select from Week, Month, or Agenda in the top right.
  • To change the selected time frame, select it from the miniature calendar in the top right.
  • To increment to the next week, month, or day, use the arrows in the top left.
  • To create a new event in your calendar, click the + icon in the top right next to the viewing method options.
  • You can change the colors for each of your courses and groups on the right side under Calendars.
  • Assignments without due dates will appear on the right side as the category Undated (under the Calendars list). It will be collapsed by default.

Syncing Canvas Calendar with Other Calendar Services

For any of the following services you must first get the iCal feed URL by following these steps:

  1. In your calendar, click the Calendar Feed link under Calendars.
  2. A modal window will appear with a link. Copy the link to your clipboard, then skip to the steps for the service you use for your personal calendar.

Google Calendar

Desktop and Web

  1. Open your Google Calendar.
  2. Next the Other Calendars header on the left side, click the + icon and choose From URL from the dropdown.
  3. Paste the link you copied earlier.

Mobile

You can't add a calendar using the mobile app, but if you add the calendar using a computer, it will appear on your phone.

iCloud Calendar

Desktop

  1. Open the Calendar app on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to File > New Calendar Subscription.
  3. Enter a name, then paste the link you copied earlier into the Subscribed To field.
  4. Choose iCloud from the Location dropdown.

This calendar will sync with your mobile app (unless you don't choose iCloud as the location).

iOS

In iOS, the link is to an iCal file (.icns), so you can just tap it and it will subscribe you automatically. If this doesn't work for whatever reason, you can try the following steps to do this manually.

  1. In the Settings app, go to Passwords & Accounts > Add Account > Other.
  2. Tap Add Subscribed Calendar.
  3. Paste the URL you copied earlier.

Outlook

Desktop

  1. Open the Outlook application and select the Calendar tab.
  2. Choose Open Calendar > From Internet...
  3. Paste the URL you copied earlier into the box and click OK, then Yes to confirm.

Web (Outlook.com)

  1. Sign in to Outlook on the web.
  2. Select the Calendar icon on the bottom of the screen.
  3. In the navigation pane, select Import Calendar.
  4. Select From Web.
  5. Paste the URL you copied earlier into the Link to Calendar input, then name the calendar.
  6. Click Import.
