Canvas Course Files

 

Summary

This article describes how to use the Files page to view files within your course.

View Files

  • Go to the Canvas Course Site you wish to view Files in.

  • Select Files from the course navigation menu.

  • All files within the course will be listed.

    • PRO TIP: The course’s storage quota is also listed in this location.

To see all files for all courses select “All My Files” in the bottom right of the screen.

Add Files

  • In the top of the right-hand corner of the screen, select the blue Upload button.

  • A new window will open with the files from your computer.

  • Select one or multiple files.

  • Select Open and verify the files are now uploaded into Canvas.

Remove Files

  • Select on the File(s) you would like to remove.

    • To select multiple files, hold down the CNTRL or COMMAND key on your keyboard while clicking on the desired files.

  • Select the three dots next to one of the files and select Delete.

  • Verify the file is now removed from Canvas.

Disable Student Access to Files

  • In Canvas, the Files area automatically allows students to access Files in which you store in the course.

  • For some courses, this id useful for sharing files for students to download.  

  • However, for most courses - instructors do not need students to have direct access to the Files area.  So let's lock it up!

To hide and restrict Student Access to the Files area:

  1. Click the Settings link from the course navigation menu.

  2. Click the Navigation tab.

  3. Click the Files(…)and select Disable.

  • The Files area will move to the hidden links section and will not be available to students.

  • Students can still access any file that is linked in a page or module.
