Integrating OER Commons

Summary

This page will explain how to use OER Commons to find OER for a course. It will also describe the process for adding links to OER in Blackboard.

Instructions

Getting Started

You’ll need an OER Commons account before you start linking content to your course. Visit their registration page to get started.

After joining OER Commons, you may optionally request to join the Boise State OER Group, where faculty and staff are actively curating resources that are relevant to Boise State courses. All members of this group are free to create their own folders and share content that they find valuable.

Finding OER

You will need to either be in a group (such as the Boise State OER Group) or have saved content to your OER Commons account prior to linking it to your course.

OER Commons has a full list of their materials available.

Linking OER to your Blackboard Course

To place your OER Commons content in your course, you’ll first need to turn on the OER Commons Tool in Blackboard.

  • Navigate to the "Course Management" area
  • Select "Customization" to expand the menu
  • Select "Tool Availability"
  • All tools are listed alphabetically. Check the box for "OER Commons"
  • In any content area, open the "Build Content" drop-down menu, then select "OER Commons"
  • Name the educational resource and then click "Submit"
  • To initiate the linking of your content, click on the link you just created
  • You’ll be redirected to your items and groups within OER Commons. After locating the resource that you would like to link, click the associated Select button on the right of the page

If you have multiple resources, you can create multiple links through the same process.
